In The Dark 03:46
My garden is overgrown, a cold wind always blows, And I never see the birds since I let the hawthorn grow The debris piles high, it taunts and it reminds, That this never went to plan and I never seem to find the time You stay silent, I hear you loud and clear, When I play this guitar I wonder what the neighbours can hear I was drinking in the afternoon when I heard the news, It always takes me a while to face up to the truth I never noticed when the light went out And now we're sat here in the dark It's getting colder since the fire burnt out And now we're waiting for a spark There's a house along the street, where better people meet, They get someone in to keep it clean and neat Their trees are always trimmed, they buy a new car on a whim, And they always fill the tank up to the brim They smile and they sigh and the children play outside, And from where I sit, they live the perfect life But behind those evergreens and their expensive caffeine, Lies a secret, a bold hypocrisy I never noticed when the light went out And now we're sat here in the dark It's getting colder since the fire burnt out And now we're waiting for a spark I never noticed when the light went out And now we're sat here in the dark It's getting colder since the fire burnt out And now we're waiting for a spark

Inhaling paranoia, its in the news most every day Searching for some kind of something to take all of this pain away While the men of means get meaner, I never know quite what to say It feels like a big change coming, another bill for us to pay Twisted into something sinister, pretty words that bother me Old doors deadlocked and bolted in towers made of ivory They'll have you bite the hand that feeds you, chasing ghosts through love and war Take us back to good old days when we died young and we died poor One man's logic is another's lunacy No one will come down and save us, so we must save ourselves No one will come down and save us, so we must save ourselves We're the long shot, the underdog, its all that we have got We're standing before Goliath with a sling full of shot Greeted like some long lost brother then poked and stirred with fear and hate Welcomed in like the guest of honour and end up on their dinner plate Simple answers to complex questions never will sit right with me A picture never tells a story, more goes on than we can see All your words don't sit right with me Just a hair from the dog, the dog that bit me No one will come down and save us, so we must save ourselves No one will come down and save us, so we must save ourselves We're the long shot, the underdog, its all that we have got We're standing before Goliath with a sling full of shot

Sometimes I speak so cynically We can't just change things with endless cups of tea And broken guitar strings So we settle in to these routines, Buy a house and keep it clean, Earn a wage, live the dream, Is it a dream if I'm awake? She spoke suddenly, "is there a draught? It's cold in here, or is it only me? I find it hard to tell, Stick to the story, The truth won't get in the way of the headlines and glory, But the bills won't go away" I lay there on the floor in a broken mess And I don't remember how I fell You helped me to my feet and you simply said, "what can I do to help? Dust yourself off, you know what to do, Lean my way and we'll see this through" The days grew colder, We put the heating on when we dared to, And we all grew older in different ways, The price gets higher, It never seems to come down, And we all get tired, and I'm tired, Of being tired I lay there on the floor in a broken mess And I don't remember how I fell You helped me to my feet and you simply said, "what can I do to help? Dust yourself off, you know what to do, Lean my way and we'll see this through" I stand before a bolted door, My knuckles worn, my voice is sore We're scraping by on little lies we've sold I know it's time to draw a line, And I don't know if this will be alright, But I've heard the words they say, So I'll turn the other way I lay there on the floor in a broken mess And I don't remember how I fell You helped me to my feet and you simply said, "what can I do to help? I lay there on the floor in a broken mess And I don't remember how I fell You helped me to my feet and you simply said, "what can I do to help? Dust yourself off, you know what to do, Lean my way and we'll see this through" While the winter's here, Do what you can to stay warm, There's always someone near, And spring is on it's way

Pieces 04:08
Nobody noticed and now I am tired Dusty books and a dampened fire The wind bites harder than it did before My voice is sore Pick up the pieces, the bits that remain Try to stick them back together again A wheel in motion, an open door My voice is sore The names were changed, it happened in a different place He swears he knows and in his heart frustration grows She feels it too but in a different way to you You fiddled while Rome burned You fiddled while Rome burned You fiddled while Rome burned Nobody noticed and now I am tired Dusty books and a dampened fire The wind bites harder than it did before My voice is sore Pick up the pieces, the bits that remain Try to stick them back together again A wheel in motion, an open door My voice is sore The names were changed, it happened in a different place He swears he knows and in his heart frustration grows She feels it too but in a different way to you You fiddled while Rome burned You fiddled while Rome burned You fiddled while Rome burned You fiddled while Rome burned You fiddled while Rome burned

When I was still a young man, Before I moved away You said "watch out for those girls my boy, they can rip your heart away, Make sure you pick a good one", Now I know you were right, I brushed it off and headed out of town for a little while You said "if this doesn't work out, you can always come back home, There's no shame in starting over, Or knowing you don't know, Never burn a bridge" you said, Now I know you were right I brushed it off and headed out of town for a little while You said "don't wear green to sail away, The young ones don't believe it, but you won't see land again There are words I dare not say For the bad luck they may bring, Just in case I'm whistling for the wind" Every problem sorted out With cups of tea and plans "Keep your cards close to your chest now, Don't show everyone your hand Beware of what you can control And never mind the rest And no matter where you're going, you can only do your best" You said "don't wear green to sail away, The young ones don't believe it, but you won't see land again There are words I dare not say For the bad luck they may bring, Just in case I'm whistling for the wind" There's a light above your old house, I see it shining bright, Our Chris says it's a planet, And I reckon that he's right, Thinking of you shining, Makes me raise my head and smile, And that you're leaving town for just a little while , And that you're leaving town for just a little while So I won't wear green to sail away Still not sure I believe it but I'll do it all the same There are words I dare not say For the bad luck that they bring, Just I'm case I'm whistling for the wind Just I'm case I'm whistling for the wind Just I'm case I'm whistling for the wind

Louisa 04:12
Lately I haven't been myself, I think you might have noticed Calls on the line, wasting my time, Two worlds collide Loratadine and news TV, Cracked and broken PVC This floor is falling through Louisa, I promised you more than overdue bills Now you're out for the night On whisky and wine and it's making me ill, Louisa Sometimes there stands a fine line Between the truth and a lie We never chose the easier road, We couldn't if we tried The glass is chipped and the door is broke, There's work to do, trust me, I know This wall is coming through Louisa, I promised you more than overdue bills Now you're out for the night On whisky and wine and it's making me ill, Louisa, I promised you more than overdue bills Now you're out for the night On whisky and wine and it's making me ill, Louisa It's been a hell of a year, For once that phrase is so true Go dry your drunken tears, The only way is through So follow me and I'll follow you, We'll stumble onwards like we do We'll go the long way round Louisa, I promised you more than overdue bills Now you're out for the night On whisky and wine and it's making me ill, Louisa, I promised you more than overdue bills Now you're out for the night On whisky and wine and it's making me ill, Louisa, oh, oh, oh, oh Louisa, oh, oh, oh, oh

If you always get What you always got You'll never know your worth, Though they'll tell you what you cost Perfume and cheap wine, A dream of a Friday night All this running round gets harder to justify Her maiden name was hope And she moves just as she please She laughs at all her own jokes And these disposable beliefs Wake every morning And follow that old routine Just how did we get here From the places we have seen? A blurry old picture Takes shape in my memory I can still hear you singing if I listen carefully Her maiden name was hope And she moves just as she please She laughs at all her own jokes And these disposable beliefs Her maiden name was hope And she moves just as she please She laughs at all her own jokes And these disposable beliefs We're all a few bad days until These walls come crashing down Know that I will never be far, I will help find solid ground, I'll do you proud Her maiden name was hope And she moves just as she please She laughs at all her own jokes And these disposable beliefs Her maiden name was hope And she moves just as she please She laughs at all her own jokes And these disposable beliefs Sometimes it tastes bittersweet, Sometimes it isn't meant to be, She came do just as she please, She knows just what she believes

I've said this before, I'll say it a thousand times more Because you don't always hear, When the real stuff gets near You nod, fidget, Take a sip of your beer Tomorrow is cancelled due to lack of interest I guess that you meant well and nobody's perfect But all I can see is this flame in your eye It's dancing, it's fighting the night, It's a flickering light Concealed with a smile, Wrapped up in a coat Unwieldy, awkward, Cracking a joke The front gate sticks And the back yards a mess Somebody once told me That you can only do your best Tomorrow is cancelled due to lack of interest I guess that you meant well and nobody's perfect But all I can see is this flame in your eye It's dancing, it's fighting the night, It's a flickering light I wept in the darkness, It roared right back at me Something insane And reckless came over me Enlighten me, brighten me, Help me begin Once more from the top, Until the day that I drop In pride an in downfall, in prayer and in blasphemy I look in the mirror, you're staring right back at me Now I can see its a fire in your eye It's dancing, it lights up the night It never will die

Bittersweet 04:43
I could buy you a dozen roses But all you'd see are thorns Sit by your side at sunset While you check you watch and wait for dawn I could buy you a diamond ring my friend But you'd only care what it is worth I could write you a song all of your own, You'd say play me one I've already heard I could drive you a thousand miles, Then you'd tell me I took the wrong road I could show you a far off paradise You'd say "there's no place quite like home" I could paint you a perfect picture But I wouldn't know where to start I could give you all my affection, You can't pay the bills with just my heart I could smile as we take our picture, The surest way to make you frown I could dream a dream of tomorrow, You'd pull me firmly back to ground I could give you all that I own, You'd search the box for the gift receipt I could lay it all out on the line, And watch you beat a swift retreat You said, "these emotions are bad for your health, The only thing worth banking on is wealth, The only thing I guarantee, Life is bittersweet" You dropped a bomb on everybody here, And now you're sitting in the wreck, It's time to move along girl, So the rest of us can clear this mess, The grass is greener where you water it, my dear, Its always black and white for me So go your way and I'll go mine now, Nothing worthwhile comes easily, Life is bittersweet.

I don't know which way I was going, Somebody told me not to fear The tide just kept on flowing And washed me up here I heard the knack is in the action, The subtle flick of practiced wrist But it was simply a distraction, An ending with no twist Walking the promenade, Glancing out to sea I wonder where you are And if you still believe That we could have it all? The likes of you and me Instead of these four walls Painted royal garden green They say that money comes to money, They say that all's well that ends well How can they say this isn't funny? This heaven within hell Show me the knack, show me some action, Show me that flick of practiced wrist Won't you give me a distraction? Just don't give away the twist Walking the promenade, Glancing out to sea I wonder where you are And if you still believe That we could have it all? The likes of you and me Instead of these four walls Painted royal garden green, green Royal garden green, green So I'll turn in my resignation, Leap from this ship before it sinks Lord, lead me please into temptation, Back from off the brink Still don't know which way I am going, No point pretending not to fear With a tide forever flowing, I will be anchored here Walking the promenade, Glancing out to sea I wonder where you are And if you still believe That we could have it all? The likes of you and me Instead of these four walls Painted royal garden green, green Royal garden green, green Royal garden green, green Royal garden green, green
