Break 05:00
Remortgage your house for a small bowl of coffee, In a shopping centre cafe, All over England our hearts give out sighs, As our England slips slowly away, If it isn't broke we'll still fix it, Then we'll fix it some more til it breaks, And we'll usually find it won't go back together again Famous only for being famous, No achievements or which they can speak, Yet this carnival never ceases, And their faces beam back at me, TV stars in love triangles, I genuinely could not care less, She could be a private dancer, he can spend his weekends in a dress Should I follow unquestioning and ignorant, Or use my own brain to decide, Should I choose to believe such frightening certainties, Or figure out my own wrong and right, Use an old book to justify, Sickening hatred and bigotry, Not for me, I think free, I have no reason left to believe My favourite shoes all have holes in now, And the water comes in when it rains, As I shuffled away I could hear a girl say, 'Don't let him come this way again', I fear all, I fear nothing, I regret all and nothing the same, I've done right, I've done wrong and held on for too long to give chase, She wanted a partner for her life, Someone with some kind of plan, A place she could build her home in, Somebody by her side to stand, All I offered her were nights out, My bad poetry and gin, And a vague idea that someday we'd accidently win Sometimes its better to break than to bend, All things must come to an end, If you can lay your head down and sleep through the night, You'll know you've done alright, yeah you've done alright, I will sleep tonight

A tired man spoke to me at the bar, Shuffling feet in well worn old shoes, He said son I can tell, and I should know well, That none of your dreams will come true, You are destined to be let down, By everyone who comes near, And all you hold dear will crumble and disappear So I replied to the man at the bar, In my well worn not quite so old boots, With a song on my lips, and at my fingertips, I know that I never can lose, I have to believe, All these things won't bring me to my knees, And as long as I'm trying I know that I'll always be free Sometimes it feels like we're marching, Into gales and pounding rain, Scores of downtrodden cynics, Insist our problems will remain, We have plenty to keep us hopeful, And lots of ways we can complain, If we can stick together, I know there are things we can change In the face of these people just carry on, Experienced doesn't always mean wise, Be sure to walk with a bounce in your step, And hold your head up high

One after the other For as long as I remember I know that things are different Since the last December I've done a lot since then Can't recall all that I've seen Always heading forwards Without really knowing what that means I lost the map back there somewhere Had a plan I'm sure I did Am I supposed to be here? Is this my dream when I was a kid? I've decided that I couldn't really give a shit I'm happy in my life and if that's not a dream then tell me what is I should have played for England by now I should have left this old town and not come back I should have money in my pocket, a house and a wife A job in middle management and a grown up social life None of these things have I got And you can keep the lot You cannot buy what I've got You cannot buy what I've got The other day a friend of mine Took me to one side and said "If you carry on this way You'll forever be in the red After this is over All you'll have are a bunch of songs You'd better make yourself some money Don't wait too long" I took this friend of mine Took him to one side and said "I've got my own road to take Keep your eyes straight ahead As long as I've enough for Pints of beer and guitar strings As long as I am able I will play And I will sing" I should have played for England by now I should have left this old town and not come back I should have money in my pocket, a house and a wife A job in middle management and a grown up social life None of these things have I got And you can keep the lot You cannot buy what I've got You cannot buy what I've got One after the other For as long as I remember I know that things are different Since the last December I've done a lot since then Can't recall all that I've seen Always heading forwards Without really knowing what that means

In the middle of the night, under artificial light, The electric orange glow, towns pass left and right, All along the new concrete, orange plastic as far as my eye can see, But I don't meet a worker for miles, Won't be home for quite a while In the middle of the night, under artificial light, Miles away from my home town, but still familiar sights and sounds, At night it all just looks the same, though I've never come this way, Another number moves the dial, Won't be home for quite a while In the middle of the night, under artificial light, Getting closer now to home, to all the places that I've known, Tomorrow I will leave again, this never really ends, Every time I turn back and smile Won't be home for quite a while
