lyrics

Remortgage your house for a small bowl of coffee,
In a shopping centre cafe,
All over England our hearts give out sighs,
As our England slips slowly away,
If it isn't broke we'll still fix it,
Then we'll fix it some more til it breaks,
And we'll usually find it won't go back together again

Famous only for being famous,
No achievements or which they can speak,
Yet this carnival never ceases,
And their faces beam back at me,
TV stars in love triangles,
I genuinely could not care less,
She could be a private dancer, he can spend his weekends in a dress

Should I follow unquestioning and ignorant,
Or use my own brain to decide,
Should I choose to believe such frightening certainties,
Or figure out my own wrong and right,
Use an old book to justify,
Sickening hatred and bigotry,
Not for me, I think free, I have no reason left to believe

My favourite shoes all have holes in now,
And the water comes in when it rains,
As I shuffled away I could hear a girl say,
'Don't let him come this way again',
I fear all, I fear nothing,
I regret all and nothing the same,
I've done right, I've done wrong and held on for too long to give chase,

She wanted a partner for her life,
Someone with some kind of plan,
A place she could build her home in,
Somebody by her side to stand,
All I offered her were nights out,
My bad poetry and gin,
And a vague idea that someday we'd accidently win

Sometimes its better to break than to bend,
All things must come to an end,
If you can lay your head down and sleep through the night,
You'll know you've done alright, yeah you've done alright,

I will sleep tonight
